The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a U.S. federal law that entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year for specific family and medical reasons, without losing their job or health benefits. This act is designed to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by providing time off for serious health conditions, caring for a newborn or adopted child, or dealing with family members’ serious health issues.
For instance, if an employee’s spouse is undergoing major surgery, the employee can use FMLA leave to provide necessary care without worrying about job security. To be eligible, the employee must work for a covered employer, have worked at least 1,250 hours in the past 12 months, and work at a location where the employer has at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius.
